Castle Square Deep Energy Retrofit is composed of four main buildings. Each building has its own boiler room on the roof that serves 48 apartments. The solar thermal system for hot water production will conveniently tie into this boiler room.
Each building will have 756 square feet of solar collectors manufactured by S.O.L.I.D. They will be installed at a 45 degree angle on a custom-fabricated hot-dipped galvanized steel frame, welded to steel stubs protruding from the roof surface. The solar thermal collectors will be installed on the south-facing side of the boilers bulkheads. The four independent systems are designed to offset 65 percent of the annual domestic hot water energy costs of the apartments, i.e. a total of 716 million Btu per year.
Solar thermal panels at Castle Square will provide hot water for the buildings, resulting in a 37 percent drop in hot water usage.
