Castle Square, the nation’s largest deep energy retrofit, will reduce its carbon emissions by slashing natural gas for heating by 71% and hot water by 78%. It will drop electric use by 60%.

Here are the Castle Square energy savings projections. Actual energy savings will be calculated after construction is complete and the property has been in operation for a year.
Before the renovation, gas for heating and hot water at Castle Square Apartments (192 apartments) cost $194,000 per year. After the Deep Energy Retrofit, gas is expected to only cost $50,000 per year. Before the renovation electricity cost $397,000 per year. After the Deep Energy Retrofit, it is expected to drop to $181,000 per year.
Before the renovation, the overall energy usage (electricity and gas) was 13.26 BTUs per square foot per heating degree day. After the Deep Energy Retrofit, Castle Square is expected to perform at 3.45 BTUs per square foot per heating degree day.
Residents currently pay for their own electricity for their apartments. The property pays for gas heat and hot water and common area electricity.
Energy savings is ratcheted down starting with the super insulated enclosure and then adding more and more energy-related improvements to reduce total energy usage by 72 percent.
